Typically not, but having type 1 diabetes does not preclude development of simultaneous type 2 diabetes, which has a different underlying mechanism. READ MORE

  • Can hypothyroidism be cured?

It depends on the cause, but generally speaking, no. It can be treated, but generally requires lifelong thyroid replacement in most cases. READ MORE

  • Can young people be diagnosed with diabetes?

  • Can kids have scoliosis?

  • Can pneumonia come back after antibiotics?

It can, especially if the antibiotic course was too short, or the wrong antibiotic for the infection was chosen. But typically, it doesn't. READ MORE

  • What is a dangerous level of blood sugar?

Any blood sugar over 126 fasting or 200 after a meal meets the definition of diabetes. When blood sugars get into the 300-400 range, patients can have symptoms. And blood sugars above 500 can cause life-threatening syndromes. READ MORE

  • Do you die from multiple sclerosis?

Not typically. Most patients die from related complications - pneumonia or other infections, for instance. READ MORE

  • What is the best food to eat when your blood sugar is low?

Something that has a small amount of simple sugars, some complex carbohydrates, some protein, and some fat. A granola bar is good. So is half a sandwich (either meat or cheese) with a glass of juice. READ MORE

  • Can anemia be a serious condition?

  • What is autoimmune hepatitis?

This is a disease where, for unknown (and likely unknowable) reasons, the body's immune system starts to attack the liver, causing inflammation and tissue damage. Treatment usually involves medications to suppress the immune system. READ MORE

  • How do I quit smoking?

Talk to your doctor about a prescription for Chantix (varenicline) and Zyban (buproprion). These drugs, in combination with a nicotine patch, are the most successful at helping patients to quit. READ MORE

  • What is acid reflux?

The stomach secretes hydrochloric acid to help you digest proteins in your food. There is a ring of muscle where the esophagus meets the top of the stomach; if this muscle is weak, stomach juices (including acid) can leak upwards (reflux) through the ring. The walls of the esophagus are not able to tolerate the acid, so the cells try to become more stomach-like to protect themselves. This attempt to change cell types makes these cells at risk for becoming cancerous - acid reflux which remains untreated for 15-20 years can result in esophageal cancer. READ MORE

  • Are kidney stones causing blood in my urine?

Very likely - blood in the urine is a hallmark of kidney stones, although it is almost always accompanied by pain, and there are other possible causes. If you are seeing blood without any pain, you should see a doctor right away. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to gain weight while on an insulin pump?

Insulin is a growth factor and a hunger stimulus. It is not uncommon for patients to gain weight any time they are started on insulin (pump or injection) if they are not warned about it and watch what they're eating. READ MORE

  • What age is a geriatric patient?

Geriatrics technically covers all patients over the age of 65. A geriatrician specialized in the care of elderly patients; discuss with her doctor if he/she feels your mother needs the specialized care of a geriatrician. Most general internists are fully capable of managing elderly patients unless they have advanced or specialized needs. READ MORE

  • Does fish oil help with cholesterol?

There is some evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can help lower cholesterol; fish oil is particularly rich in this type of fatty acid. That being said, no one has actually studies whether patients who take omega-3s have a lower rate of heart disease; we only assume it will help because we know it lowers the lab values. READ MORE

  • Can statin drugs harm your liver?

Yes, statins can cause liver injury in anyone, and the risk is higher in patients with pre-existing liver disease from other causes. However, the benefit from taking statins is huge; I would not stop the statin unless and until there is evidence of a problem. READ MORE

  • Are snoring and sleep apnea the same thing?

Sleep apnea occurs when you have pauses in your breathing. It is not the same as snoring, although loud snoring is commonly present in patients who have sleep apnea. • How are blood clots dissolved?

Your body has natural biochemical processes to form clots, and natural processes to dissolve clots. Left alone, most clots will eventually be dissolved. For large clots, or clots in dangerous locations, we give anticoagulation medications ("blood thinners") to block the clot formation process; this allows the body's natural clot-dissolving process to work faster. In really bad cases, we can give "clot busting" drugs to rapidly dissolve the clot, though these are reserved for life-threatening illnesses because of the very high risk of bleeding. READ MORE
