Raised in the Cleveland suburbs, Dr. Phelps-Sandall cherishes memories of visits with loving grandparents, cousins, and friends. Her diverse experiences include teenage travels throughout the United States and Europe with “Up With People.” Ohio State was the site of her undergraduate work, where she earned degrees in Biology and Dental Hygiene. Furthering her education, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Health Education from the University of Cincinnati while practicing as a dental hygienist and teaching at a community college.

Relocating to California marked an exciting change from the Midwest. Dr. Phelps-Sandall continued her graduate studies at CSU in Sacramento while teaching at Sacramento City College and UC San Francisco. Graduating with her Medical Degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 1989, she completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Santa Clara Kaiser. Driven by an interest in integrative medicine, she pursued a Fellowship Program at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil’s leadership and participated in the Leadership Program in Integrative Healthcare at Duke University.

The mission of the ABOG is to define standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health.

Dr. Phelps-Sandall has dedicated her time to various volunteer initiatives, including a week working in Haiti shortly after the earthquake (2010), participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk (2011, 2018 & 2019) and participating in the Avon 39 (2012-2017). Inspired by a transformative experience walking 72 miles of the Camino de Santiago Compostela in Spain, she embarked on a second pilgrimage in 2017, covering 182 miles while carrying the names of 100 cancer victims for recognition.

Beyond her professional commitments, Dr. Phelps-Sandall enjoys a range of personal interests. She is an avid reader, with a penchant for history, biographies, and the classics. Her adventurous spirit extends to scuba diving in diverse locations such as Hawaii, the Cayman Islands, Mexico, and the Galapagos Islands.
