Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Matthew Sardelli, who serves patients in Clarkston, Michigan.
Dr. Sardelli is a highly trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who has been in practice since 2010. He is the owner and operator of Sardelli Orthopaedics, PLLC, an orthopedic and sports medicine practice in Clarkston, Michigan.
Having had the privilege of caring for athletes of all ages, Dr. Sardelli is the team physician for Fenton, Goodrich, Brandon, Davison, and Lapeer high schools. He is also the current team physician for the Flint City Bucks USL2 professional soccer team, returning them to their sport activities in a safe manner.
Finding joy in teaching, Dr. Sardelli has trained medical students, orthopedic residents, as well as orthopedic surgeons throughout his career. He serves as an Associate Professor at MSU College of Human Medicine Flint Campus (since 2010) and as an Assistant Professor at Central Michigan University College of Medicine (since 2021).
In regards to his educational background, Dr. Sardelli graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Physiology from Michigan State University in 1999. He then went on to earn his Medical Degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2004.
Furthering his training, Dr. Sardelli completed his orthopedic training at the University of Utah in 2009 and went on to complete a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the TRIA Institute/University of Minnesota from 2009 to 2010.
After graduating from his fellowship, Dr. Sardelli completed a Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) in orthopedic sports medicine in 2016, the highest level of training for orthopedic sports medicine. In addition, he has had the opportunity to care for athletes with the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Wild, and the Minnesota Twins while also caring for athletes at the University of Minnesota.
On a professional level, Dr. Sardelli is an active member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Association, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (as an Emerging Leader), the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (as a Fellow), the Michigan Orthopedic Society, and the Michigan State Medical Society, where he contributes to educational initiatives statewide.
Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
Dr. Sardelli has been invited as a guest Grand Rounds lecturer at both the Detroit Medical Center and Western Michigan University. He has also presented at the national meeting of the American Orthopaedic Association as an invited speaker.
Contributing articles to the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Dr. Sardelli serves as a current reviewer for the journal. His work has also been published in Arthroscopy and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine.
Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Sardelli enjoys spending time with his wife and their daughters, and finds relaxation in playing golf. Florida ranks as his top vacation destination, and he favors professional publications like AJSM, JBJS, Arthroscopy, and JSES.
