Robert Unsell, M.D. provides comprehensive Orthopedic Hand and Upper Extremity services, including hand, elbow, wrist, bicep and sports medicine care. The practice also provides Migraine Headache Treatments, a unique Spider Bite Treatment and Workers’ Compensation care. Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons, like Dr. Unsell, use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. Dr. Unsell received his medical degree from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. Thereafter, he completed his residency with Loma Linda University Medical Center, followed by fellowship trainings in Orthopedic Hand Surgery with Loma Linda University School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine. After graduating from Loma Linda School of Medicine, Dr. Unsell spent more than a decade serving at Loma Linda in several positions, including the Assistant Professor of Orthopedics and the Assistant director of the Hand Fellowship Program. He has been involved with the training of 35 hand fellows, 15 of which now hold academic teaching positions. Dr. Unsell was also the director of replant services while at Loma Linda University and has replanted everything from the thumb of an 18-month-old to the complete arm of a 70-year-old. For more than 30 years, Dr. Unsell has treated injuries including wrist fractures, carpal tunnel, bicep reattachments, rheumatoid reconstruction and many others. He feels that his job is not merely treating symptoms, but treating the whole individual. For this reason, his patients’ personal goals play an important role in his decision-making, helping guide what will be best for each and every patient. Dr. Unsell has received several awards throughout his line of work, including Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2011) and Patients’ Choice Award (2011, 2018). In his spare time, he enjoys biking, gardening, woodworking, photography, and serving in his local church.
