Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Anjay Khandelwal, who serves patients in Akron, Ohio.

Dr. Khandelwal has joined Akron Children’s Hospital as a surgeon specializing in acute/reconstructive burn surgery and surgical critical care in the hospital’s Burn Center. He maintains expertise with adult and pediatric burns (thermal, chemical, electrical, and inhalation), complex wounds, trauma, surgical critical care (ICU management), and Steven-Johnson Syndrome.  

The Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center provides specialized inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims of all ages throughout northeast Ohio. It is recognized for its commitment to total burn care and a formal system for quality burn-care delivery by the American Burn Association and the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. 

As one of only two pediatric hospitals in the country that treats adult burn patients, the Akron Children’s Hospital Burn Center has a treatment room, physical therapy room, operating room, and tub room. It cares for burn victims from time of injury through rehabilitation.

As a former staff surgeon in the division of trauma, critical care, acute care surgery and burns at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Dr. Khandelwal was the director of the Burn Care Center and co-director of the Institute of Burn Ethics. He was also an assistant professor of surgery and bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland.

Maintaining fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS). 

In addition, he is a member of the American Burn Association, the American College of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Surgeons – Ohio Chapter, the American Medical Association, the International Society for Burn Injuries, the Surgical Infection Society, the Society for Critical Care Medicine, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Khandelwal graduated with his medical degree from Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College in Karnataka, India. He then served his residency in general surgery at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. This was followed by a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of North Carolina/UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, and a burn/burn reconstruction fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

With a commitment to excellence, he is board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.

Active in burn education and international outreach, he is the Co-founder and one of the Medical Directors of Camp Karma – India’s first and only recreational pediatric burn camp. Serving as an expert witness, he is also available for medical and medico-legal consultation. 

Happily married, Dr. Khandelwal and his wife, Dr. Cathleen Khandelwal, reside in Lakewood with their two daughters.
