Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Carol S. Shapiro, who serves patients in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Recognized as a 2020 Top Doctor, Dr. Shapiro is a well-respected, board-certified plastic surgeon. Since November of 2010, she has been serving as the Director of the Sentara Wound Healing Center in Woodbridge, Virginia.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Shapiro earned her medical degree from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1965. She then went on to complete her internship in general surgery at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1966, followed by her residencies in general and plastic surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in 1969 and 1972, respectively. She also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from George Mason University. 

Passionate about her profession, the doctor is board-certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

Among her university faculty positions and teaching experience, she served as a Clinical Instructor within the Department of Plastic Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (1970-1974, 1991-1998). She also actively lectured to junior and senior medical students at D.C. General Hospital (1970-1974), as well as supervised and trained residents, interns, and students at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (1972-1974). 

Inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and as a Fellow of the American College of Physician Executives (FACPE), Dr. Shapiro stays up to date in her field through membership with numerous professional organizations. These include: the Alumnae Association of Medical College of Pennsylvania, the American Medical Association, the American Medical Women’s Association, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Northern Virginia Foundation for Medical Care, the Fairfax County Medical Society/ Medical Society of Northern Virginia, the National Capital Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Prince William County Medical Society, The Medical Society of Virginia (serving as first woman President since 1997), the Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Virginia State Association of the National Association of Parliamentarians, and the Professionals Advocate Insurance Company Claims Committee.

Furthermore, she is a part of the Potomac Health Foundation Board of Trustees, serving as Vice-Chair since 2013 and on the Chair Grant Committee since 2009. She is also MAC Chair of the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center (since 2015); and on the Strayer University Board of Trustees (since 2015), where she serves as a member of the Curriculum Committee, the Alumni Committee, and the Membership Committee.

In the community, Dr. Shapiro has been serving as a primary physician with “Effort to Remove Gang Tattoos” in Prince William County, Virginia since 2008. 

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done. 

In her personal life, Dr. Shapiro is happily married to Lt. Col Donald E. Morgan, USAF, (Ret.).
