  • Does bariatric surgery help GERD?

Bariatric surgery does help GERD, gastroesopageal reflux disease/heartburn, most of the time. Losing abdominal weight decreases pressure on the stomach which means less force to push stomach juice up into the esophagus. The gastric bypass is especially good at curing GERD. Some sleeve gastrectomy patients will get a worsening of their GERD. If a hiatal hernia is present where the diaphragm opening for the esophagus is wide which allows the stomach to slide up into the chest and cause GERD, that hernia can be repaired at the time of the bariatric procedure, potentially curing GERD or decreasing its chance of occurring. Insurance companies have various requirements before approving payment for sleeve gastrectomy. Each policy is different and can take 1 month to 6 months. If the patient is investing in himself or herself and paying cash for the procedure and avoiding often unnecessary insurance requirements, the sleeve gastrectomy can be scheduled 1-2 weeks after the first visit with the surgeon if the patient is otherwise healthy and has a low risk for anesthesia. Bariatric surgery (or weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Long-term weight loss through Standard of Care procedures (Roux en Y Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, and Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) is largely achieved by altering gut hormone levels that are responsible for hunger and satiety, thereby leading to a new hormonal weight set point. A doctor who specializes in this type of surgery is known as a bariatric surgeon.

With his impressive bedside manner and excellent surgical skill, Dr. Redmann has been named one of the Top Surgeons in America. He recently received the distinction of Top Doctor 2020 by New Orleans Magazine. This recognition of achievement personifies the trust and confidence of his patients as well as doctors nationwide. His excellent clinical skills, coupled with humble interpersonal skills, endear him to his patients, staff and colleagues.
