Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). An obstetrician-gynecologist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders that affect women, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and menopause. Additionally, they work with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during childbirth, and into postpartum.
In 2018, the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), showcased Dr. Sandoval-Herrera after successfully performing a milestone hysterectomy. A patient with an exceptionally large uterus was given several opinions; her hysterectomy should be performed using an open-approach, which would have resulted in a large incision and required a longer recovery period. Instead, Dr. Sandoval-Herrera used a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach. The procedure was a complete success and there were no post-surgical complications. The patient was discharged in two days.
Dr. Sandoval-Herrera stands among the select surgeons who have received training in the cutting-edge VNOTES technique, the latest advancement in minimally invasive procedures. With VNOTES, he can perform vaginal hysterectomies for cases that were traditionally considered laparoscopic or abdominal procedures. The remarkable aspect of this technique is its scar-free nature, offering patients a surgery with no visible scars.
A Master Surgeon in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (MSMIG), Dr. Sandoval-Herrera was awarded with the Golden Scalpel, Golden Laparoscope and Golden Apple at Mount Sinai Hospital. He also received the distinguished recognition as Champion Surgeon of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology.
On a more personal note, he speaks multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and French.
