Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Skankey graduated with his medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in 1986. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and his fellowship in infectious disease at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center.

With over 35 years of experience, he is board-certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Skankey is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA).
