Get to know Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Kelli D. Salter, who serves patients throughout the State of Georgia.

A highly-trained thoracic surgeon, Dr. Salter is affiliated with Piedmont Heart Institute, working with patients in the Atlanta, Stockbridge, and Jasper areas.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Salter earned her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2003, and completed her residency in general surgery at Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine in 2010. She then went on to complete two consecutive fellowships at the same educational venue, specializing in critical care medicine and cardiothoracic surgery. Finally, she completed an additional fellowship in thoracic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

In her local area, Dr Salter maintains hospital privileges at Piedmont Atlanta, Piedmont Fayette, and Piedmont Rockdale.

Thoracic surgery refers to operations on organs in the chest, including the heart, lungs, and esophagus. Examples of thoracic surgery include coronary artery bypass surgery, heart transplant, lung transplant, and removal of parts of the lung affected by cancer. Thoracic surgeons treat injuries, diseases, and congenital abnormalities in a patient’s chest, including surgery to remove tumors, manage disorders or repair trauma to the heart, blood vessels, lungs, esophagus, and diaphragm.
