Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Ferdinand Rivera Ortiz, who serves patients in Puerto Rico.

As a fellowship-trained nephrologist, Dr. Ortiz’s top areas of expertise include osteomalacia, childhood hypophosphatasia, juvenile paget’s disease, and hypophosphatasia. He is currently affiliated with a number of hospitals and medical centers in Puerto Rico, including Hospital Auxilio Mutuo, Hospital HIMA San Pablo · Bayamón, Hospital Damas, Hospital de la Concepción, Manatí Medical Center, and Metro Medical Center.

Educated in Mexico, Dr. Ortiz graduated with his medical degree from the School of Medicine at Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in 1998. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in nephrology at VA Medical Center in 2002 and 2004, respectively. 

A Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN), the doctor is board-certified in nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
