Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Michael A. Wilmink, who serves patients in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Wilmink is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who practices at OrthoArizona in Phoenix, Arizona. He is drawn to the unique problem-solving aspects that the field of orthopaedic surgery presents. Whether this is through an arthroscopic joint reconstruction of shoulder or knee injuries or complex joint replacement of the hip or knee, his experience in practice will deliver patients the outcome that they deserve.

Since 1994, the team of orthopaedic specialists at OrthoArizona has been dedicated to compassionate care of the highest quality. The orthopaedic and podiatric surgeons along with primary care physicians specialize in all areas of musculoskeletal care, including sports medicine, spine, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, hip, knee, foot, ankle, pediatrics, trauma, and workers’ compensation. OrthoArizona has 21 offices throughout the Valley, each focused on quality care, compassion, and excellent customer service.

As the surgeon who introduced the anterior hip replacement to Arizona in 2007, Dr. Wilmink feels compelled to introduce new and improved technology to the Phoenix community through his prudent appreciation and judgment of current scientific advancements. He is affiliated with several hospitals and medical centers in the local area, including Banner University Medical Center, Gateway Surgery Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center, HonorHealth John C. Lincoln, OASIS Hospital, and Banner Surgery Center.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Wilmink earned his medical degree from The University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine. He then went on to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at The University of British Columbia.

“At six years old, I decided I wanted to be a “Brain Surgeon”. I obviously didn’t know what that meant at that age. I played water polo from a very young age and at age 15 started playing on the national team. I played on that team through my third year in medical school. We traveled around the world to play and always had our team physicians with us. The exposure to that profession piqued my interest. The sports side of the profession and the daily problem-solving confirmed my decision to go into orthopaedic surgery. Nothing ever presents the same in orthopaedics.” as stated by the doctor.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC), he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Maricopa County Medical Society, the Good Samaritan Medical Center Ethics Committee, and the Phoenix Boys and Girls Club Executive Council.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Orthopaedic Surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.

Outside of the practice of medicine, Dr. Wilmink is a member of the Phoenix Thunderbirds, which allows him to work with other community leaders to raise charitable dollars. As an alumnus UCLA All-American Water Polo Player, he follows John Wooden’s philosophy of “Work hard, stay humble.”
