My son has dislocated his shoulder twice from playing baseball. Will this have an effect on him in the future?
Shoulder instability, particularly in younger athletes, tends to recur at a very high rate. Basically, this means his shoulder will likely continue to periodically dislocate when in the vulnerable position. Therefore, a surgery that stabilizes the shoulder is typically recommended. This could be done in the offseason if he can and desires to complete his current season. How this affects him in the future is indeterminate. The shoulder is more likely to continue to be problematic if this is his dominant shoulder, especially if he's still throwing. However, some patients have stabilizing surgery, have excellent outcomes and return to their previous level of function. Rehab after the surgery is very important. Regarding long-term shoulder issues, it's not easy to predict. Those with recurrent dislocations are more likely to develop osteoarthritis of the joint decades later, but not all patients go on to have arthritis. READ MORE
I have sore knees from running. Will ice compression help?
Ice works as a pain-reliever with likely some mild anti-inflammatory properties. In most patients, it is typically neutral or helpful. Meaning, it either has no positive or negative effect for some patients and helps others. It's likely more helpful in patients with swelling in or around the joint. Try for 20 minutes 1-2 times the first few hours after running for 3-4 days. See how you feel later in the day and the following day. If helping, then continue. If not, then don't continue to spend your time doing this. Be careful not to let the ice pack stay on your skin for too long, as frostbite can occur. Best of luck! READ MORE
Severe biceps pain?
Time to see an orthopedic physician. Biceps area pain is most commonly seen when there is damage to the long head biceps tendon and/or rotator cuff tendons. A fracture of the humerus is possible but less likely. A history, detailed exam, x-rays and possible ultrasound and/or MRI are the next steps to help make the diagnosis and get you some pain relief. How long should I wait before eating after finishing a game?
There are no hard and fast rules about eating after an athletic event. So, you are permitted to eat immediately after an athletic event if you choose to do so. There is some expert opinion that eating a source of protein of 10 grams or more within one hour of a workout can assist with muscle recovery. More important that when you eat after a game is what you eat. Choose a well-balanced meal with some high-quality protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, if at all possible.
