Get to know Family Physician Dr. Vincent E. Schaller, who serves patients in Hockessin, Delaware.
Dr. Schaller is a board-certified physician with over 25 years of experience, including in-patient and out-patient medicine, ER, ICU, CCU, pediatrics, primary care, and concussion management. His careful, complete examinations, combined with his friendly bedside manner, have earned him the respect of doctors and the trust of patients throughout Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
He is the Founder & Medical Director of Mid-Atlantic Concussion Alliance (MAC), which is a growing network of certified medical professionals and athletic trainer affiliates located throughout Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey. It has provided comprehensive concussion care for over 12,000 patients, and trained more than 500 providers on offering concussion care.
As a brain injury testing, diagnosis, treatment and concussion management specialist, Dr. Schaller’s chief goal is to facilitate the spread of new concussion technologies from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)’s renowned five-stages of exertion therapy (physical and vestibular therapy) post-concussion management program to the Mid-Atlantic states. The members are clinician specialists who have earned the title of Credentialed ImPACT Consultants (CIC) by undergoing specialized impact training in concussion care management with the ImPACT Protocol (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), the country’s most widely used and scientifically validated computerized brain injury evaluation system.
A Certified ImPACT Consultant for over 10 years, Dr. Schaller and his staff have successfully applied the latest UPMC Concussion Protocols to over 11,000 patients in the Tri-State Area. He has had the opportunity to train over 500 medical professionals including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, chiropractors, and other health professionals. These professionals were trained in how to apply the latest technologies of the UPMC Concussion Protocols, including the Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) along with the application of ImPACT and Cambridge Brain Sciences neurocognitive testing to not only diagnose concussions, but also to follow them objectively to full recovery.
In 2013, Dr. Schaller was seeing not only injuries in athletes, but also in students participating in gym class, playing on the playground or just going about their daily activities in the school environment. He started a new initiative as the Medical Director of the Diocese of Wilmington, with the sponsorship of Dynamic Physical Therapy (Now Pivot Physical Therapy) and ATI Physical Therapy, called the All Student Baseline Testing Program. This initiative was implemented in all 24 Catholic Diocese of Wilmington Schools, ensuring that all 6th and 9th grade students received ImPACT baseline testing. Since the program’s inception, many baseline-testing results have already been successfully used to diagnose and treat concussions in both athletes and non-athletes.
Graduating with his medical degree from the Penn State College of Medicine in 1993, Dr. Schaller went on to perform his residency in family medicine at Hunterdon Medical Center in 1996.
That same year, he earned the distinction of Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine (DABFM). The American Board of Family Medicine is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
Actively involved in concussion research, Dr. Schaller and his team are utilizing the latest in concussion technologies to screen, diagnose, and treat concussions including: BrainScope One EEG analysis, Cambridge Brain Sciences testing, EyeGuide Focus 10-second eye-tracking system, ImPACT testing systems, and RightEye infrared eye-tracking assessment.
