What is the procedure for replacing crowns?
For a variety of reason, older dental crowns may require replacement. When a tooth that currently has a crown is causing pain, that is often an indication that a cavity may be forming under that crown. If the tooth, however has already had a root canal, although a cavity may be forming, you won’t experience pain in the form of sensitivity to hot/cold/sweets. The pain you may be experiencing may be a result of a dental infection from either a failed root canal treatment or a fractured tooth. A consultation with your dentist is critical in diagnosing the reason for your discomfort. Once it is determined that your crown needs replacement, the current crown is ‘cut off’, the cavity/decay is removed and the tooth is rebuild/reprepared; an impression of the new crown preparation is taken (either in a digital or conventional form using impression materials) - this is sent to the dental laboratory to make a new crown. Meanwhile your dentist will send you home with a temporary crown. I hope this explanation helps. I hope you feel better and get taken care of soon! READ MORE
