Get to know Pulmonologist Dr. Walter Randy Martin, who serves patients in Roseville, California.

Dr. Martin is a board-certified pulmonologist who specializes in infectious disease medicine and wound care. He is especially passionate about the treatment of complicated wounds and wound infections.

He is currently on staff at Pulmonary Medicine, Infectious Disease and Critical Care Consultants Medical Group, Inc. (PMA) in Roseville, California, which he joined in April of 1990. Incorporated in 1973, PMA providers offer a broad spectrum of specialized services often found only in an academic setting. The scope of services available from the group’s board-certified providers include, but are not limited to, critical care medicine, tele-ICU-care, pulmonary medicine, allergy care, infectious diseases, palliative care, sleep medicine, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

In addition to serving patients at PMA, Dr. Martin is the Medical Director of Infection Control at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Serving the communities of South Placer, North Sacramento and beyond, the modern 791,000-square-foot campus offers acute care for all ages in a healing environment enhanced by a 57-acre, oak-studded landscape. Sutter Roseville Medical Center has 328 licensed beds and a full array of services and programs designed to serve the growing community.

After spending a year as a sewage plant operator in Alaska, Dr. Martin went to college. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York, followed by his medical degree from the University of Washington. He then went on to complete his internship in internal medicine, his residency in internal medicine, his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care, as well as his fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of California Davis School of Medicine.

During medical school, Dr. Martin volunteered at the sports medicine clinic at Harborview Medical Center and has retained his interest in sports injuries as well. While training at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, he was the Johnson High School team physician and volunteer coach for the wrestling team.

He chose to become a physician because he wanted to make a difference. More specifically, he chose pulmonology because he was especially convinced that the management of complicated infections and pulmonary problems are serious challenges to an individual’s life.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. Martin is a member of the California Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Sierra-Sacramento Valley Medical Society, the Sacramento/El Dorado County Medical Association, and the American Thoracic Society. He is also board-certified in both internal medicine and pulmonology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. A pulmonologist is able to treat a variety of respiratory conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, sleep apnea, emphysema, and tuberculosis. They can draw on a number of therapies to treat these diseases, including antibiotics, steroids, and other medications.

On a more personal note, Dr. Martin is the oldest of five children and many of his extended family are located in the Seattle area. His wife, also in the healthcare field, is a physical therapist. He enjoys outdoor photography, hiking, and activities in the Lake Tahoe area. He also spends his free time coaching high school wrestling as a volunteer at Foothill High School. Moreover, Dr. Martin is a photographer and videographer for the Fair Oaks Theatre Company. In addition to English, he speaks German.
