Are all elective procedures canceled due to the coronavirus?
In Lewes Delaware, where I practice, all elective procedures have been restarted after having been postponed during the lockdown. The patients are all tested for Covid19 three days prior to an elective procedure and have to quarantine following the test to minimize the presence of Covid19 in the surgery center. Get to know Plastic Surgeon Dr. Patrick Swier, who serves patients in Lewes, Delaware.
Dr. Swier, Founder of The Swier Clinic, is the only Ivy league-trained full-time plastic surgeon in Sussex County. He specializes in skin cancer excisions and reconstructions using the Mohs technique and plastic surgery closures, as well as procedures such as facelifts, eyelid surgery, breast enhancements and reductions, liposuction, and tummy tucks (abdominoplasties).
Being a general plastic surgeon in a small but growing community, Dr. Swier has a varied practice, which at one point included hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, breast reconstructive surgery, trauma surgery, hernia surgery and is now focused mostly on cosmetic surgery and skin cancer surgery as the main components.
A native of the Netherlands, he has been practicing plastic surgery in Delaware since 2002. He earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He did his general surgery and plastic surgery residency training at the Johns Hopkins University / University of Maryland combined program in Baltimore, which is one of the premier plastic surgery residency programs in the country.
As a medical student, Dr. Swier did research at the University of Utah artificial heart lab and helped design and test new heart valves, stent coatings, and new prototypes of the artificial hearts as a bridge to transplantation. He also performed many heart transplantations in mice and rats, which sparked his interest in microsurgery and plastic surgery. Within the Plastic Surgery Department of the University of Utah, he perfected these microsurgery skills by doing limb transplantations in a rat model, working with Dr. Graham Lister and Dr. Maria Siemionow.
After passing his written and oral examination at the first opportunity, the doctor received his certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done.
Among his various achievements, Dr. Swier has been widely published, has been a presenter at national medical conferences, as well as has been named “Top Doc” in Delaware by Delaware Today Magazine every year from 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.
Happily married, he met his college sweetheart as a student in Salt Lake City. They have two wonderfully gifted children. In his spare time, Dr. Swier likes to spend time with his children and their 3 dogs: Bella, Fiona, and Hodor. He also likes to play golf, swim, and sail.
In addition to English, he speaks French and German.
