Get to know Geriatrician Dr. Patrick C. Carey, who serves patients in Simpsonville, South Carolina.

A fellowship-trained geriatrician, Dr. Carey manages and develops care plans that address the special health problems of the elderly. 

As Medical Director for the McCall Hospice House of Greenville and for Open Arms Hospice (a ministry of St Francis Hospital), his principal practice is to provide relief of the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering experienced by the hospice patients and their families who are under his care. He can also be found on staff at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina.

The operating hospice of the McCall Hospice House of Greenville and a department of Bon Secours, Open Arms Hospice provides quality, compassionate care to patients with a life-limiting illness and support for the caregiver and family. Its goal is to enable patients to live each day comfortably and free from pain and symptoms. 

Educated in the United States, Dr. Carey graduated with his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1984. He then went on to perform his internship and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, and his fellowship in geriatrics with The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. 

Completing his training in 2005, he attained board certification in internal medicine, geriatric medicine & hospice and palliative care through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Continuously advancing his efforts, Dr. Carey is an active member of the American Association of Hospice and Palliative Medicine & the American College of Physicians.

Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a specialty that focuses on the health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. A geriatrician is a health care provider who focuses on patient well-being and independent functioning. These allopathic or osteopathic health care providers are specifically trained to evaluate and manage the unique health care needs and special treatment requirements of older people.
