Dr. Hashim, a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon, is best known for his expertise in mitral valve repair. At present, he serves as Chairman of Cardiac Surgery & Co-Physician in Chief at Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. Prior to his current roles within Hartford Hospital, he served as the Director of Cardiac Valve Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital for over a decade. While there, he performed New England’s first mitral valve repair in 1984. That same year, he performed the first heart transplant in Connecticut.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Medical Association, the Yale Surgical Society, the New Haven Medical Association, and the Connecticut Medical Association. Additionally, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

A 1975 graduate of Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Hashim relocated to the United States to complete his residency in general surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s in 1979. This was followed by a residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1981. 

An international leader in cardiac surgery, he has developed one of the first mitral valve repair programs in the United States, pioneered techniques in minimally invasive aortic and mitral valve surgery, and performed more than 2,000 mitral valve repairs and 10,000 open-heart procedures. He has also served as a primary investigator on several trials, including SurTAVI, COAPT, Commence, and APOLLO.
