After earning his medical degree from the College of Medicine University of Baghdad, he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the University of Baghdad/Medical City Teaching Hospital (1981-1986), Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London (1986-1988), and the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (1988-1991). This was followed by fellowship training in nephrology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center from 1991 until 1993.
The doctor is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine – a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
