After earning his medical degree from the College of Medicine University of Baghdad, he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the University of Baghdad/Medical City Teaching Hospital (1981-1986), Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London (1986-1988), and the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (1988-1991). This was followed by fellowship training in nephrology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center from 1991 until 1993.

The doctor is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine – a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN). 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy.
