Get to know Psychiatrist, Dr. Tena Moyer, who treats patients in Tucson, Arizona

Dr. Moyer is a leading psychiatrist practicing with La Frontera Center in Tucson, Arizona. La Frontera Center is a drug treatment facility providing substance abuse treatment with outpatient care. Licensed to practice in the states of Arizona and California, Dr. Moyer specializes in addiction psychiatry and is affiliated with Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital and TMC HealthCare in Tucson, Arizona. 

Dr. Moyer received her medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, in 1988. She then completed her internal medicine residency with the same educational venue (1992 – 1993), followed by her psychiatry residency at the University of Arizona School of Medicine (1997 – 2000). Prior to medical school, Dr. Moyer obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Independent Studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Moyer became board-certified in psychiatry  by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) is a nonprofit corporation that was founded in 1934 as a method of identifying the qualified specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). 

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behaviour, cognition, and perceptions.

Addiction psychiatry is a medical subspecialty within psychiatry that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of people who are suffering from one or more disorders related to addiction. This may include disorders involving legal and illegal drugs, gambling, food, and other impulse control disorders. Addiction psychiatrists are substance use disorder experts.

Prior to her current endeavors, Dr. Moyer served as Director of Liaison Psychiatry at Sierra Tucson in Tucson, Arizona. Over the years, she has completed extensive training in multiple psychiatric and psychological techniques, as well as psychoanalytic and psychodynamic training. As such, she is trained in Somatic Transformation Therapy and Gestalt Equine Psychotherapy. 

Dr. Moyer attempts to synthesize diverse perspectives and approaches into her understanding and treatment of psychiatric patients, including biological, developmental, attachment, family systems, trauma, and psychoanalytic considerations.
