  • I experience sore throats quite often. Could it be due to some kind of an allergy?

The critical issue is whether your nasal discharge is clear and white or discolored. Allergy could very well be the cause if the discharge is clear or white. A discolored discharge would suggest a sinus infection. READ MORE

  • Is an allergy to apples possible?

You most likely have the ”oral allergy syndrome,” which is a localized oral reaction to a protein just beneath the skin. It is related to pollen allergy - most likely birch pollen. It will not occur with cooked apples. READ MORE

  • I found that I'm allergic to cats. Is it a lifelong allergy?

Cat allergy is common and is primarily directed at the animal’s saliva. Cats groom their entire fur coats constantly and cover the fur with the saliva. Histamine reactions occur when we reencounter an allergen (tree pollen suddenly reappears in the spring) or if there is a sudden increase in allergen levels (cut the grass and blast mold into the air). Chronic exposures lead to less obvious inflammatory reactions, although these reactions can be more serious and insidious, as they can drive chronic asthma and/or sinus problems. Individuals living with a cat all of the time (chronic exposures) often are unaware of the inflammatory reaction, as it is not dramatic like the histamine reaction. These people often think they have “outgrown” their allergy, but they have not. You will probably not outgrow the allergy. Effective desensitization is available from qualified board certified allergy/immunologists. READ MORE

  • Strange allergy, what is it?

You have what is called the oral allergy syndrome. You are allergic to a variety of pollens that are related to a protein found beneath the skin in certain vegetables and fruits. The exposure only occurs when you bite into the fresh fruit or vegetable. Salivary enzymes destroyed a protein before you can swallow it, so the reaction occurs only in your mouth. Cooking the food item destroys the protein, so you do not experience it with cooked foods. Cutting into the fruit or vegetable away from the skin will also help avoid the reaction. Desensitizing to the pollen will eliminate the oral reaction, and this is the only type of food allergy that can be treated with allergy shots. READ MORE
