Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Joanne D. Bishara, who serves patients in New Jersey.

Dr. Bishara is a knowledgeable, fellowship-trained neonatologist whose research/clinical interests include family-centered care, pulmonary hypertension/bronchopulmonary dysplasia, palliative care/neonatal ethics, and congenital heart disease.

Licensed to practice medicine in New York and New Jersey, she sees patients at Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center & Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center. 

Hackensack Meridian Health Hackensack University Medical Center is a 770-bed non-profit, research and teaching hospital. Located seven miles west of New York City, in Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey, the hospital provides tertiary and healthcare needs for northern New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area.

Palisades Medical Center is a 202-bed hospital located in North Bergen, New Jersey, United States, that serves a population of 400,000 in Hudson County and in Southern Bergen County. The non-profit medical center is part of the Hackensack Meridian Health Network, whose mission is “to provide the full spectrum of life-enhancing care and services to create and sustain healthy, vibrant communities.”

Alongside her clinical role, Dr. Bishara serves as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics within the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center. The program’s mission is to train the next generation of academic neonatologists so that they can function as independent, competent, compassionate, and well-rounded physician educators and physician-scientists.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after she earned her medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 2006. She then went on to complete her internship and residency in pediatrics at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in 2007 and 2009, respectively. This was followed by a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Columbia University – Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital in 2012.

Passionate about her profession, Dr. Bishara is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units.
