  • What should I do when I twist my ankle?

The most important aspect of the management of an acute ankle injury is an accurate diagnosis. Missed fractures can cause lifelong pain and/or instability. Minor (grade1) ankle sprains are usually self-limited, and are best managed with ice, elevation, and rest. More severe sprains may require immobilization in a boot, splint, or cast. Any significant ankle injury should be evaluated by a competent health care professional. READ MORE

  • How long does a sprain take to heal in children?

Most authorities describe three types of sprain injury depending on the severity. A Grade 1 sprain involves minimal tissue damage, and no loss of structural integrity. A Grade 2 strain involves greater tissue damage and may be associated with some loss of structural integrity, resulting in mild ligamentous laxity (stretching). A Grade 3 sprain is the most severe category, with greater tissue damage and loss of structural integrity. The healing time for each category of sprain injury in children will vary according to the Grade of injury as well as the child's age. In general, younger children heal faster than older children. With any extremity injury in children, it is important to make sure that the growth centers of the bones have not also been injured. I hope this information has been helpful. Todd READ MORE
