Chiropractors absolutely effectively treat SI joint pain. I question what exact symptoms you're getting to state you have SI joint pain. That's rare for someone to differentiate without being evaluated by a physician first. However, with SI joint pain, the main cause of this is also what is known as Lower Cross Syndrome, which is just a fancy term to the muscle imbalance of the muscles that pull on your pelvis. Special considerations need to be made for the patients current scenario such that I would not treat SI joint pain the same for a 8 month pregnant patient vs a steel worker who had fell off a scaffolding. Herniation's of the lumbar spine is extremely painful and can unfortunately scare people to seek surgical options sooner then they should. However, when you start having neurological deficits such as inability to control bladder, bowel, muscle movements, or can not feel anything with parts of your legs THEN you skip to the front of the line for surgical intervention as this can lead to permanent damage. Pain is the ultimate motivator for many patients however it is not a reason to jump right to surgery first. The hierarchy of treatment should always start conservatively with either chiropractic or physical therapy, and in those treatments the provider should be looking for the palliative movements (meaning pain free motions you can perform). Treatments can be either strengthening and stretching in nature at first, however, I find that starting with palliative treatments with Ultrasound, Traction, Electrical Stimulation, Flexion Distraction Traction or Decompression Traction, and Spinal Adjustments are highly effective for treating ~80% of the cases. There a very powerful muscle groups that attach directly to your spine and the chance of them going into spasm causing additional stress on the herniated disc is always where painful flare ups can occur. Pain management can be addressed with your Primary Care Provider. The root cause of the pain is the disc it's self so I find doing medications to help you through treatment such as muscle relaxers or noninflammatory medications does help, however, should not be the only treatment option. Next level of treatment would be to Pain Management Specialist for a series of injections, word of caution with this is if a provider is doing injections into your spine make sure they are either doing it Ultrasound or Xray Guided. If they pull out a needle and say we are going to put this in your back and they feel they can just palpate be concerned. At this point guessing is not what you want to see a provider doing. If no progress is seen after pain management then surgical intervention should start becoming a more likely option for treatment. The surgical risk are real and need to be laid out to you, I find the best surgeons know the statistics of their hospitals infection rate off the top of their head as this is the most common issue with surgeries. Chiropractic is a safer option to explore first yes definetly. I feel that his chronic low back deserves at least a chance to see what a chiropractor can do. Now realistically if it's "chronic" it makes the chances of a "miracle" adjustment where the persons hunched over and can barely walk and walks out in no pain much less likely. And finding a chiropractor that fits your husband is important too, unfortunately I can not say just go see the first chiropractor that pops up on google or the phonebook. Reason I say that is some chiropractors specialize in only certain types of treatment styles many fitted either for geriatic, pediatric and such, and I feel if your husband is reluctant to do medications, and would rather live with some pain then he needs a chiropractor that is more sports medicine based. Sciatica has two main causes. Option one is that theres irritation to the lower lumbar spine effecting the nerves that make up the sciatic nerve. Option two is that the nerve is being entrapped usually at the hip however it can be entraped at other locations. As a general rule nerves do not like being stretched, that is why I would express caution with yoga. Is there a chace it could help you? Yes, but the chances of it aggravating the sciatica is greater. Once the sciatica has subsided from resolution of the cause then yoga is a great preventative measure to take to ensure it does not return. I would reccomend either a chiropractic evaluation or physical therapist evaluation to find the source of the sciatica, and treat the sciaitca first. READ MORE
In order to maintain normal disc health through ones life there are many factors. Hydration is a key factor, the disc material is commonly referred to as a "jelly doughnut", as it's made up of a stiffer cartilage on the outside and a fluid filled center,and if you dry up the "jelly" then the overall health of the disc deteriorates. Which if one takes joint supplements such as glucosamine chondrotin, you have to have an abundance of water in the area or else the supplements won't help. The way in which these work is by drawing water into the cells to help re hydrate them. So if the surrounding areas do not have enough water as it is then they won't be able to bring the water in that's necessary. Then theirs the lack of motion that also causes accelerated degeneration of the disc. The disc is not as well supplied with a rich blood supply as other tissues are in the body. With that said the disc needs motion whether it is simply twisting, side bending, forward, backward, compression, or distraction it needs motion to promote the movement of nutrients and waste products. Without proper motion the disc material starts to starve in a toxic waste land essentially as it can not get the waste products out. Imagine the burn you get from a lactic acid build up in your muscles that your body could not clear as well so you felt it longer then normal. That's whats going on in the disc without proper motion. As far as treatment is concerned degenerative disc disease, DDD, is treated best if you do take the water and hydrate appropriately, along with joint supplements, ensure also a good diet that is protein rich and diverse, join a gym in weight bearing exercise, and I strongly suggest a chiropractic appointment because restoring motion to the disc is what they do with their adjustments. Sudden onset of swelling should always be addressed. As you state being in a certain posture for a long time causes increased pain, this means that the physical stress on your spine in that position is irritating and causing swelling. Chiropractic treatment can help, but until you're examined it is unclear if the swelling is due to a sprain/strain, disc pathology, arthritic changes, etc. And exercises to be prescribed need to be done that are condition specific in your case to ensure the irritated tissue does not continue to be irritated. Dancing in heels especially if you haven't trained in heels can definitely be the reason you're experiencing knee pain. However most of the time it's not due to a knee problem it's usually due to ankle immobility from tight calf muscle. When you dance in heels the calf muscle shortens and can cause changes in your gait due to the immobility in the ankle. Which you would think would cause more pain in the ankle, however the knee many times due to the change in your gait is over stressed, and is where their pain is felt. Being overweight does add more stress to the spring ligament in the foot that is responsible for holding up your arch. And, over time, it can be the reason you find your feet are losing their normal arch. However, if you have other family medical histories of diseases that affect the ligaments and collagen like Ehlers Danlos or Marfans, you would then want to look into those being contributing factors along with the weight gain. I suggest getting your feet at the very least a pair of semi-rigid orthotics, prefabricated ones depending on your symptoms may be enough. This could be an array of different problems. You could have strained a hamstring, hip rotator, gluteal muscle (referral can be down the leg), or sprained the SI joint, have a hip flexor spasm, sciatica, or a disc problem. Now all of those are some of the differentials of what it could be if the pain is only going into the back of the leg. See either a PT or a Chiropractor for treatment. They will most likely do soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization or adjustment, and passive therapies (Stim, Ultrasound, traction) of course all of this is dependent upon what they find on examination. Then once the pain is reduced and the chances of re injury decrease progressive exercises would be added. And if the pain does not improve over the first 4 weeks then I would suggest imaging and seeing possibly an Orthopedist. READ MORE
Pain in the forearms with associated weakness could be a repetitive-use injury like tennis elbow or golfer's elbow. Although rare, it could also be a nerve impingement at the elbow or thoracic outlet syndrome. However, if you cannot pinpoint a reason why this would be due to activity, I would suggest seeing an orthopedist to have X-rays done. It could be a disc problem in your neck at C5/C6 and C6/C7, as they are the most common areas affected. This, unfortunately, is what I would consider most likely to be causing the problem. And if that is the case, I suggest seeing someone who does cervical traction, along with either joint mobilization or chiropractic adjustments. READ MORE
