Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Douglas K. Hawley, who served patients in Ohio.

Dr. Hawley is a highly trained hematologist-oncologist who is retired from practice. During his active years on the job, he served as one of the five founding physicians at OHC, one of the nation’s largest oncology groups and the Tri-state’s only remaining independent oncology practice.

His areas of interest included Hodgkin’s disease, hematologic malignancies, sickle cell disease, lung cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, other solid tumors, and unusual diseases.

In a letter sent to his patients, he explained, “I love what I do now; I am as enthusiastic as I was 30 years ago when I first started my practice. But, as I turn 65 years old this coming year, I worry that the 18 hour days, missed meals and missed sleep are becoming an increasing threat to my good health. Although I would love to do this until age 90, I just don’t think it’s realistic.”

After graduating with his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1979, Dr. Hawley went on to further his training. He performed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in hematology at University of Cincinnati Medical Center in 1982 and 1985, respectively.

As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Since April of 2015, Dr. Hawley has been serving as the Director of the Associate Hematology Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the said establishment.

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Hematology.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
