Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Talat Ahmed, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Ahmed is a board-certified neonatologist, who is in practice at The Texas Womans Hospital located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Its mission is to create a healthier future for children and women throughout the global community by being a leader in patient care, education and research. 

In 1979, Dr. Ahmed earned her medical degree from the Patna Medical College and Hospital in Patna, Bihar, India. She then went on to complete her rotating internship at the same educational venue, followed by her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada in 1997. A year later, she completed her residency in pediatrics at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn in New York, New York. 

In addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the doctor is board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The ABP is an independent and nonprofit organization that was founded in 1933. It is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. 

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially those that are ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinate care and medically manage newborns born premature, critically ill, or in need of surgery.
