As an addiction psychologist in Philadelphia and also a certified alcohol and addiction counselor I am encouraged by McCance-Katz's position on addiction treatment and I believe she can help with mental health parity and rather than a war on drugs emphasize support for addiction treatment. My only concern is an over emphasis on medical addiction treatment at the risk of neglecting the social support elements of psychotherapy in recovery. We haven't decided for certain that addiction is a disease, maybe it is and maybe it isn't but doctors shouldn't have a monopoly on treatment when the most important aspect of recovery is human connection. More than anything, recovering individuals benefit from talk therapy, social support, structure, supervision, spirituality (even if agnostic or atheist and then non-drug or alcohol substitutes for addictive behaviors like positive addictions, rituals, hobbies finding meaning and purpose in one's life, friends and compassion. I hope Elinore will help us help our patients find those resources too. Jeremy Frank PhD CADC Clinical Psychologist and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor in Philadelphia PA.
