Get to know Hand Surgeon Dr. Allan E. Peljovich, who serves patients throughout the State of Georgia.

Named an Atlanta magazine ‘Top Doc’ for the past several years, Dr. Peljovich is a skilled hand surgeon with The Upper Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia. With offices in Atlanta, Alpharetta, and Cumming, The Upper Hand & Upper Extremity Center of Georgia is the Southeast’s preeminent practice dedicated to providing hand and upper extremity care to patients of all ages. The practice (formerly The Hand Treatment Center) was founded in 1973 by Dr. Loui G. Bayne, one of the nation’s pioneers in pediatric and adult hand surgery. The fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeons of the practice are noted experts in treating all injuries/problems affecting the elbow, forearm, hand, and wrist. They also specialize in treating injuries of the brachial plexus and peripheral nerves.

In his current capacity, Dr. Peljovich serves as the Medical Director of the Hand & Upper Extremity Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, continues as one of the founding surgeons to the Brachial Plexus Clinic at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and is a consulting surgeon for the Limb Deficiency Clinic of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital. He is also co-Division Chief of Hand Surgery for the Atlanta Medical Center Orthopaedic Residency, and can be found on staff at Shepherd Center, Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, and WellStar Atlanta Medical Center. Previously, he served as Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Section at Northside Hospital – Atlanta. 

After earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Peljovich went on to complete his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Case Western Reserve University and his fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Harvard University/Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. He completed an additional fellowship in the surgical restoration of the tetraplegic hand and upper extremity at MetroHealth Medical Center. He also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from Emory University. 

When asked what the most important thing he learned in medical school was, he answered: “To always make sure I pay attention to what patients are actually coming in for, and to listen to what they’re having trouble with. As surgeons, it’s not our job to see a patient and immediately begin to figure out what surgery to do. That’s a lesson I’ve never forgotten.”

Following his education, the doctor became board-certified in orthopaedics and surgery of the hand by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Paraplegia Society, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Spinal Injury Association, the Atlanta Orthopaedic Society, the Charles H. Herndon Alumni Society, the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, the Georgia Society for Surgery of the Hand, the United Spinal Association, and the National Spinal Cord Injury Association. 

His team affiliations include: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Athletics, The Epstein School, Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, Riverwood High School, and 6-4-3 DP Athletics.

Hand surgery is surgery of the hand, the wrist, and the peripheral nerves of the upper limb. It also encompasses reconstructive surgery that improves upper limb function. Many disorders and injuries of the hand are treated without surgery, using splints, taping, injections, and hand physiotherapy. Hand surgeons care for these problems with and without surgery. They are specially trained to operate when necessary. Many hand surgeons are also experts in diagnosing and caring for shoulder and elbow problems.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Peljovich has authored various publications and chapters on topics concerning problems affecting the hand and upper extremity. He was recently honored for his work with his election into the American Orthopaedic Association. 

In his personal life, he and his wife, Lori, are the proud parents of three children. His musical instrument of choice is the bass guitar and punk rock is his favorite.
