Get to know Hospice and Palliative Care Specialist Dr. Elise C. Carey, who serves patients in Rochester, Minnesota.

A prominent hospice and palliative care specialist, Dr. Carey is affiliated with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her areas of clinical interest include communicating with seriously ill and dying patients and their families, and prognosis and care of frail elders.

Graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College with a major in Psychology, Dr. Carey attended Dartmouth Medical School and Brown University School of Medicine for her medical education. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in geriatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. Finally, she completed her research fellowship in geriatrics at the same educational venue, which included completing a one-year “Advanced Training in Clinical Research” certificate program.

Passionate about her profession, the doctor is board-certified in hospice & palliative medicine, geriatric medicine, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Achieving fellowship status, she is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), and a Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM).

Hospice and palliative medicine is a formal subspecialty of medicine in the United States that focuses on symptom management, relief of suffering, and end-of-life care. Hospice and palliative medicine specialists are medical doctors who help prevent and relieve suffering of patients who have a serious illness or who have only a short time left to live. They work with a team of other professionals to address the needs of both the patient and loved ones.

Among her various accolades, Dr. Carey has been the recipient of the 2022 Hospice and Palliative Care Top Doctor Award, and 2019 Distinguished Educator Award by the Department of Medicine, Mayo Clinic.
