  • What could be the reason for my "hazy" hearing?

Males typically will develop hearing issues more than women. You did not state your gender. There are several reasons for a person to develop hearing loss. One is being around loud noises such as a "rock band", shooting guns etc... The other is age related hearing loss. The only way to determine what your diagnosis would be is to seek out an ENT and have a hearing exam. The other concern is the hearing loss on both sides or only on one side. OR, in some cases it is because you have a build up of wax in your ears and most physician offices can irrigate ears, or you can use mildly warm sweet oil using a few drops each night to break up the wax. If you continue to have the problem I encourage you to seek out an ENT specialist for a more definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. READ MORE

  • Is obesity a direct cause of diabetes?

You have a valid concern. Type 2 diabetes does have a genetic link to other family members developing diabetes in the future. Controlling your weight and exercise can delay the onset of diabetes. Of course, eating right and not overeating carbohydrates such as french fries, pastries and pasta, etc., will not only help your weight, but will help in the development of Type 2 diabetes. The answer is, yes, do continue to watch your weight and diet and be regularly checked for diabetes as it can slip up on you. By controlling your weight, eating a healthy diet focusing on low glycemic foods, increasing exercise, you can take proactive measures to live a healthy lifestyle and prevent becoming insulin resistant in the future. This is a good question which I am asked quite frequently in my clinic. READ MORE

  • Are chest pains always an emergency?

Any chest pains can be concerning. Yes it can be nothing or something. A lot depends on age and health history. Anyone that has had a previous cardiac event or a diabetic or other health problems such as obesity, high cholesterol or hypertension should be immediately evaluated. Age is an important part of the decision as well. The older you the more likely you may be having a cardiac event. Better to be safe than sorry at any age. However, she could be having acid reflux and a cardiac event so it is important for her to now follow up with a cardiologist to make sure. Some cardiac events or heart attacks present differently in men than women and vary from person to person. I advise her to see a cardiologist as soon as possible and if the chest pain returns, go immediately to the ER. READ MORE

  • What are the qualifications and training required to become a specialist in family medicine?

I am happy to hear you want to go into family medicine. Family medicine allows you to work in urgent care, primary care, emergency rooms and clinics. It is a very diverse field and teaches you a broad spectrum of medicine and it is very rewarding. In order to become a family medicine physician you will need to complete medical school or DO school and then apply for a residency program which is 3 years. Medical school or DO school is 4 years. So at this point in your life to fulfill the requirements you have 7 years to go. Don't worry it goes faster than you think and you will be richly rewarded by having the ability to treat and diagnose so many patients. Good Luck. READ MORE
