Broken foot?
You have related a 2-year-old fracture history with your current symptoms of pain, swelling and discoloration. There is no attached photo for me to give you an exact diagnosis and suggestion. Also, you have not mentioned where the fracture was, and treatment was given with complete healing of the fracture. If all of the above is true, then it may be worthwhile to see a vein specialist to see if you have chronic varicose veins causing the above symptoms. If fracture was not treated, then you may have to see an orthopedic surgeon or a podiatrist, get X-rays of foot, and if that is negative, see a vein surgeon. Thank you, Girija Surya, MD READ MORE
Will my belly button look normal after hernia surgery?
Hi, You did not specify what kind of hernia repair you are having done. If it is an inguinal hernia repair, which is a hernia in the groin region, your belly button is not affected. If it is an umbilical hernia repair or a ventral hernia repair, the answer is that your belly button may not look the same. In case of an umbilical hernia, the hernia has been there bulging through your belly button, and so you might have seen a bulge through the belly button for years before you get the repair done. Even so, since the incision is close to the belly button and the bulging hernia is reduced and the weakness is repaired with sutures before closing the incision, there will be a new appearance to the belly button which you will get used to, and it will obviously a better looking belly button than one with the bulging hernia. Third kind of hernia is a ventral or abdominal hernia which is a large bulge through the fascia weakness in the abdominal region, and is usually repaired with a larger incision to close the defect in the fascia, and if it can be done laparoscopically may be done with more than 1 small incisions. I am a chest surgeon, so I don't do abdominal hernias, but I have seen and helped in some during my gen surgery years. With large ventral hernias, sometimes they have to remove some skin if excessive, stretched skin is present due to sagging skin after weight loss. In these instances, they have to redesign and create the belly button placement like new. READ MORE
Does the bulge go away after hernia surgery?
Hi, As a reply to this email, first, I would like to know if you are talking about a hernia in the groin area called "Inguinal hernia," or a large hernia in the belly region, which is a hernia caused through abdominal muscles and fascia, and is called "ventral hernia," which causes a larger bulge in the belly.there is also "umbilical hernia," which is again through weakness in the fascia behind the belly button. All these hernias, when repaired, will make the bulge go away for sure, but if associated with obesity, an abdominal hernia repair may not appear to give a flat appearance, even if the hernia is repaired due to obesity of the abdominal area. Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of organs inside the thoracic cavity — generally treatment of conditions of the heart, lungs, and other pleural or mediastinal structures. Cardiothoracic surgeons generally perform surgery of the heart and chest.
Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.
Born in India, Dr. Surya is an American citizen by naturalization. She currently resides in Monmouth County. She has a daughter, a son, and a golden retriever “Hershey” loved by all in the family. She loves biking, dancing, playing tennis, and painting with watercolors.
