A dynamic and widely respected academic leader, Dr. Burd is the Sylvan Frieman, MD Endowed Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
Recruited to the University of Maryland from Johns Hopkins University, she rose through the ranks from Assistant Professor to Full Professor.
Among her hospital affiliations include UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Academically, Dr. Burd graduated with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology from Rutgers University in 1995, and her Medical Degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2003. She then went on to perform her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 2007, followed by her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2010.
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Burd is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.
In affiliation with several professional organizations, Dr. Burd is a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Society for Reproductive Investigation, and the Perinatal Research Society.
Her research interests include maternal fetal medicine, fetal neurosonology, fetal echocardiography, fetal programming, immune fetal programming, neuroimmune fetal programming, as well as exposure to intrauterine inflammation and infection.
Obstetrics and Gynecology is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology. An obstetrician-gynecologist, or OB-GYN, is a healthcare professional who specializes in female reproductive health.
Having published over 150 peer-reviewed research articles, Dr. Burd is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Ikaria Research Award from the Perinatal Research Society, a Research Award from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology/American Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Foundation, the Thomas R. Boggs Jr. Research Award from the Philadelphia Perinatal Society, the Passano Foundation Clinician Scientist Award, the SRI President’s Achievement Award, and the ASRI Distinguished Service Award. She is also the recipient of a National Institutes of Health funding from 2009.
From 2016 – 2021, Dr. Burd served as a Chair of NICHD Study Section “Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Biology”. She is a past president of the Perinatal Research Society and immediate past president of the American Society for Reproductive Immunology.
