  • Is it normal to have jaw pain with braces?

How old are YOU?  Orthodontic treatment means TOOTH and bone changes. With braces there is constant pressure that causes bone resorption. There is also tension that causes bone formation. This together with the teeth that have ligaments attached to both the root in one side and the bone (jaw) in the other side will cause pain. Ask your dentist what medication is best for you. Advil, Aleve Tylenol are good options.A. Romanowsky DDS READ MORE

  • How long until you can eat normally with braces?

Every Patient is different. Sometimes it takes several days to be able to eat normally with braces. The reason is teeth ARE MOVING and the ligament that holds teeth to the jaw are tender. Braces and bands make food difficult to chew. You will be able to eat, take it easy , eat slowly. Make sure you brush and clean after each meal.It is possible that after each visit to your Orthodontist You may need a few days to get used to the new position of yourteeth. The entire process must be done slowly to have a correct outcome and a good "bite". At the end you will also have a beautiful SMILE! READ MORE

  • What is a good treatment for gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a generic term for gum disease. You must go to a trusted dentist and have a full examination . He will evaluate your problem and suggest the best treatment. It could be as simple as a full set of radiographs and reduce inflammation with chlorhexidine mouthwash ,together with deep cleaning and correct home care. Many times a more extensive treatment is required. A gum specialist known as a Periodontist is necessary to be consulted in a few occasions. READ MORE

  • How long do implant crowns last?

Implant crowns can last 30 + Years if they are done correctly and the patient takes good care of them by brushing and flossing daily. You should also have them checked by your dentist twice a year. Make sure they do not feel hitting the opposing tooth prematurely. If you notice the gum surrounding the implant is sore or bleeds, you MUST see your dentist ASAP. READ MORE

  • Are partial dentures supposed to be tight?

It is often that partial dentures feel tight at first. Within two weeks they will feel much better. If they feel tight after a week or so, go back to your dentist and he will be able to adjust them. By then You will know exactly the area that is still tight. READ MORE

  • What painkiller can I take for tooth pain?

DEAR PATIENT: It would be a mistake to recommend a painkiller for your tooth problem. The correct way to treat You is to FIND OUT what is causing the pain. Most times it is inflammation due to infection or trauma. You MUST see a dentist so he can evaluate the problem , take one or more radiographs and carefully check the area . Is it due to a gum problem? a deep cavity or fracture. Sometimes an opposing tooth is "hammering" against the area . Several other alternatives can be the culprit. We are dentists NOT mind readers nor magicians. We must have a correct diagnosis before we can prescribe antibiotics or analgesics or anything else. READ MORE

  • What type of crown is best for front teeth?

Front teeth are the most demanding to restore. The light shines directly to that area. Teeth adjacent to the crown are natural teeth and enamel has several areas of translucent and sometimes opaque shades that makes this very demanding for the dentist and laboratory tec. to work together. Today we have several materials that can be used, porcelain has improved and can be made to match adjacent teeth. A close-up picture and study models can be sent to the lab to provide better information. Zirconia has been my favorite in most cases as it combines beauty and strength. In a good dental lab it is my retauration of choice. READ MORE

  • How can I permanently fix a gap in my teeth?

You must evaluate each patient. There is NO one correct answer, It depends if your opposing teeth are "hitting" where the gap is located. It also requires for the dentist to evaluate if it is better to close the gap by MOVING all the teeth in the area, or if it will be correct just to add with tooth color composite both sides of the space. That will be sufficient sometimes to have an esthetic and functional result. READ MORE

  • How long should you wear dentures every day?

Ask the dentist that gave them to you. In my opinion you should wear them as much as possible. If they hurt or need adjustments make sure to call your dentist and point out where them problem is. READ MORE

  • How painful are braces?

Every case is different. Some patients have discomfort for a few days because they need to move their teeth to a new position and the initial pressure will cause some pain that can be handled with Tylenol or Aleve. Many times, you must use a bit of pressure to achieve separation and that can cause discomfort. For the most part, orthodontic tooth movement is tolerable. READ MORE

  • How long do fillings last on baby teeth?

Fillings on baby teeth can last many years if you make sure the child does NOT eat sticky candy and the child brushes twice a day with a soft brush. Have your dentist check your child periodically and an x-ray should be taken to ensure there are no recurrent cavities at least every two years. READ MORE

  • Do they take X-rays for cavities?

It is important to know if the cavity extends to areas in between teeth. Most times dentists can visually detect cavities that are on the occlusal area or in the front area, it is very important to rule out the fact that the cavities are also in between teeth. Todays x-rays are excellent in helping diagnose "interproximal cavities. The ADA suggests that dentists must take x-rays prior to treating a cavity. Dentists must also verify with x-rays if the periodontal and root areas are affected prior to start treating cavities. READ MORE

  • What happens if you use too much denture adhesive?

If you wear dentures and you use excessive amounts of adhesive, it will cause a problem. The dental adhesives occupy space under the denture, this space will cause the gum and sometimes the bone to recede. It will come a time when not even huge amounts of adhesive will hold the denture in place as the fit of the denture will have changed significantly. READ MORE
