Frederick Ntum Lobati, MD, FACP, is an internist and hospitalist currently serving patients at Cox Health Systems in Missouri. In 1988, Dr. Lobati attended the University of Cologne and earned his medical degree. Throughout his career, Dr. Lobati has held many faculty appointments including being an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri from 2004 until 2006, and then again from 2014 until 2016. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Lobati has also received many awards and accolades including the CMS Stage 1 EHR, the Physician\'s Recognition Award with Commendation, and the Physician of Distinction from the American Medical Association, which he was awarded six times. In order to stay up to date in his field, he maintains a professional membership with the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Missouri State Medical Association, the Greene County Medical Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Frederick Ntum Lobati wears a number of hats as a respected internist, board certified infectious disease specialist, and dedicated hospitalist.
With a passion for excellence, Dr. Lobati has been delivering exceptional care to hospitalized adult patients at CoxHealth Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri since July 2016. Not only is he committed to his patients’ well-being, but he also plays an active role as a valued member of the Diversity Committee, fostering an inclusive healthcare environment.
With a rich background that spans across continents, Dr. Lobati’s journey in medicine has been marked by a commitment to healing and a passion for serving others. Born in Cameroon, he graduated from high school at the Cameroon College of Arts, Science and Technology in July 1980. Following that, from September 1980 to August 1982, he pursued German Language and Pre-medical studies at the University of Cologne in West Germany. Subsequently, from September 1982 to August 1984, Dr. Lobati engaged in Pre-clinical Medical Studies at the University of Duesseldorf in West Germany.
Continuing his medical journey, from September 1984 to December 1988, he pursued Clinical Medical Studies at the Faculty of Medicine – University of Cologne, culminating in his graduation and passing of the German Medical Board Exam to obtain a Medical Degree on December 9th, 1988. To further enhance his skills and knowledge, from January to April 1989, Dr. Lobati undertook a 3-month Post-graduate Diploma course on Tropical Medicine and Community Health Care sponsored by the German Foundation for International Development in West Berlin, in preparation for practice in an underdeveloped world country.
Following his post-graduate experience, Dr. Lobati began by practicing as a Generalist Physician with the Cameroon Baptist Convention Medical Board Hospitals and Clinics at Banso and Mbingo from July 1989 to April 1993. In April 1993, he relocated his family to the United States for further training.
From May to September 1993, Dr. Lobati underwent an externship at UMKC School of Medicine affiliated hospitals (St. Luke’s Hospital and Truman Medical Center) to familiarize himself with medical practice in the United States in preparation for residency and fellowship training. He embarked on an internship in internal medicine, residency in internal medicine, and fellowship in infectious disease at the same institutions between October 1993 and September 1998.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Lobati has held esteemed positions, including:
- Since May 9th, 2015: Designated Active Civil Surgeon of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security.
- October 1988-May 2001: Clinical Director of the STD Clinic at the Kansas City, Missouri Health Department.
- June 2001-March 2004: Emergency Room/Triage Physician at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.
- April 2004-September 2006: Staff Physician and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Missouri Rehabilitation Center in Mount Vernon, Missouri.
- 2004-2006: Consultant on Tuberculosis for the Missouri Department of Health.
- October 2006-October 2013: Practice of Traditional Internal Medicine at the Mercy Clinic and Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.
- April 2009-February 2014: Attending Physician at the LongTerm Acute Care facility, Select Specialty Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.
- March 2014-June 2016: Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Fairview General Internal Medicine Clinic with the University of Missouri Health Care System in Columbia, Missouri.

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Lobati has acted as a clinical preceptor and made significant contributions to medical education during his tenure in private practice of general internal medicine (October 2006-October 2013). His involvement includes serving as a preceptor for various schools such as the University of Central Missouri, Missouri State University, and A. T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, among others.
Board certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Lobati also holds certifications in ACLS and ATLS.
A distinguished member of various medical associations, including the American Medical Association, the Missouri State Medical Association, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the American College of Physicians (Fellow), and the Royal Colleges of Physicians (London), his contributions to the field have been widely recognized.
Dr. Lobati is a recipient of numerous accolades, including Physicians’ Recognition Awards with Commendation and the Physician of Distinction from the American Medical Association. Additionally, he holds the distinction of being the first author of the paper titled “Osteomyelitis; Etiology, Diagnosis, Treatment and Outcome in a Public versus a Private Institution,” published in the European Journal of Infection in 2001.
Driven by a desire to unravel the complexities of illness, Dr. Lobati has made a significant impact not only in the medical field but also in the lives of individuals in his homeland of Bamenda, Cameroon. His philanthropic efforts extend to creating employment opportunities for the less fortunate, supporting education initiatives, and providing financial aid to those in need back in Africa. Additionally, he engages in training students, residents, and fellows in the practice of internal medicine at the bedside in both ambulatory and hospital settings.
Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Lobati engages in medical missions in Africa, is a published author, and is fluent in multiple languages, including German and French. His commitment to personal growth and well-being is reflected in his hobbies, which include spending quality time with family, reading historical books, and traveling. His favorite professional publications include Clinical Infectious Diseases and JAMA, to name a few.
