    For patients without periodontal disease, a prophy (“dental cleaning”) every 6 months is appropriate. For patients that have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, a more frequent maintenance schedule is set.     Root canal therapy can last forever. You need to remember that it is still a tooth and it requires regular oral hygiene (daily brushing and flossing). Additionally you will need to maintain your regular “cleaning” appointments and exams to prevent decay. Root canal teeth, even with crowns, can still get decay.
