Is surgery the only treatment for TMJ?
No, surgery is absolutely NOT the only option for those suffering from TMJ Disorder. The root cause of the disorder needs to be properly determined by a dentist with the proper training to diagnose and treat TMJ. Look for a dentist who has training in neuromuscular dentistry, and who will assess the joint via CBCT. The bite has to be considered, with full muscle and joint testing with ultrasound, electromyography (EMGs), and computerized jaw tracking. A well trained neuromuscular dentist can help treat TMJ non-surgically by determining the root cause of the dysfunction and then addressing the functional disharmony between the muscles, joint, and teeth that is causing the TMJ/D. Do cavities ever need to be refilled?
Yes, sometimes cavities need to be re-filled. Even the very best restorations have a certain time limitation for ideal function in the mouth. Fillings are constantly exposed to bacteria, chewing forces, and temperature swings in the mouth, all of which can cause the filling to wear out. If your dentist sees signs of additional decay around your filling the formed since the last one was placed, cracking or chipping of the old restoration, or microleakage occurring with your current filling, a new restoration is indicated. Your pain could be due to any number of issues, some of which can be addressed without necessitating a new restoration. Schedule an appointment with your dentist soon to determine the best solution for your problem. READ MORE

How often do you need your teeth cleaned?
If you take care to have good oral hygiene habits and a healthy mouth, then a professional cleaning at least twice a year is recommended. If you have bleeding gums during brushing and flossing, that is a sign of inflammation and a bacterial load that needs to be addressed, because healthy gums don’t bleed when measured at the dentist’s office or during brushing and flossing at home. If any bleeding is present, then it is recommended that you have appointments with a dental hygienist on a personalized schedule to get it under control. Once you no longer have any bleeding, you can come in less frequently again after the tissue is restored to health. Only a dentist and hygienist can look at your gums and tell you your custom recommendation for how often to have them cleaned. READ MORE
Is it bad that I leave food in between my teeth?
Unless removed, the effect of food stuck between the teeth will be a high amount of bacteria that are left alone to multiply and cause gum disease in those areas. This can lead to severe bone loss or even the loss of the adjacent teeth. Cleaning these areas is extremely important to prevent any disease progression. An oral irrigator, such as the Hydro Floss is recommended. READ MORE
