  • For what conditions does hydrotherapy work?

I love this question! Hydrotherapy is one of my favorite 'old school' treatments. Because it is such a broad term, there are many things it can be used for. Hydrotherapy can simply mean soaking in a jacuzzi because it the the application of hot water for relaxation and sore muscles. There are constitutional treatments, saunas, cold mitten friction. So without knowing which treatment you are looking at it's hard to tell. But as a generalization, we use hot and cold water to stimulate the movement of the lymphatic system by moving the blood. Think of it like a work out without being in a fight or flight state. It's a very invigorating yet relaxing type of therapy that stimulates the body's own ability to heal. The Chinese called it Qi (Chi), the Egyptians called it Ka, Naturopathic doctors call it Vis or life force. Since it's so broad we can use it from everything from swollen joints, to a cold, to digestive issues, to oversell wellness and promoting a parasympathetic state. READ MORE

  • Are henna leaves helpful in treating hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused from multiple reasons including hormone imbalance, an infection (think cradle cap but not), a nutrient deficiency. So, most patients need a multifaceted approach to stop and hopefully reverse it. However, in my clinical experience I can't say that I've seen Henna leaves help. READ MORE

  • How can I increase my metabolism rate through naturopathy?

Because Naturopathic doctors look at the whole person, we can help you identify if it is purely a dietary issue or if hormones are also affecting metabolism. READ MORE

  • Is there a cure for PCOS with naturopathy?

PCOS is so multifaceted and involves much more than just reproductive hormones. That being said, myself and my colleagues are very experienced using diet, herbs, vitamins/minerals, and lifestyle changes to make it easier for our PCOS patients to conceive and have less painful periods. • Everytime I follow a naturopathy diet plan I end up with a headache. Is it normal?

If by "naturopathic diet plan" you mean less sugar and simple carbs, then yes, that's totally normal and will not last long. It's like a mini detox from all of that addictive sugar. Give your body time to acclimate and you'll see dramatic shifts in mood and energy along with weight loss. READ MORE

  • What is a naturopathic treatment for removing gall bladder stones?

This is hard to answer without seeing his labs and imaging. People who have gallbladder 'sludge' or tiny stones can be helped dramatically with specific naturopathic treatments, dietary aids, and herbs. However, if the stone is too large, surgery may be the option he needs to have it resolved without permanently losing his gallbladder. I would always advocate for a safe removal and then address lifestyle issues after he recovers. READ MORE

  • What is the best way to treat blood pressure using naturopathy?

I feel like I answer most questions like this, but it depends on the case. If you were diagnosed as pre-hypertensive, there is wonderful evidence showing how diet and lifestyle changes, like exercising, can drop you out of this range. However, if you are a more severe case I would MUCH rather you go on blood pressure medications to control that number so your stroke risk goes down. That is when naturopathic medicine works best, non-emergent situations to fix the underlying issue. I would rather work with you to get you off of a blood pressure medicine than work with you recovering from a stroke. READ MORE

  • Is it true that naturopathy medicines only work with the right diet?

To an extent that is true. If you eat Oreos and Big Gulps every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, there is no amount of supplements I can give you that will counteract that. So, we do make dietary changes. But a good doctor knows to make small, sustainable changes so patients aren't overwhelmed with all of the change at once. Some foods are more important to remove sooner than others but that is completely case dependent. For example, I can recommend a list a mile long of supplements, herbs, and things to do to help avoid migraines, but if you are eating a food that triggers them or are exposing yourself to that trigger on a regular basis, you will never get rid of the migraines without removing the offender. • Can a naturopathic treatment help in treating my acne problem?

There are so many underlying reasons for someone to have acne. Our job is to find out why and fix the problem. So, depending on what's causing your acne, the treatments will vary in length. But yes, naturopathic doctors can most certainly help with that! READ MORE

  • Is there a treatment in naturopathy to treat hair loss?

It depends on the cause of the hair loss. If it's a micronutrient deficiency we address diet and add in supplements. If it's from a skin condition that must be cleared first. Some people have a hormonal-based hair loss, and of course some is genetic. Having said that, we can almost always find the cause after an initial intake and some labs. READ MORE

  • Should I take my daughter to a naturopathic physician for her pain during her period?

Yes, please do! Most docs are quick to push oral contraceptives to "help" these problems, but in reality, it's setting women up for a lifetime of struggle. Naturopathic physicians can help with herbs and supplements to balance out hormones based on her specific symptoms without administering hormones like a birth control pill would. READ MORE

  • What are the naturopathic remedies for my sleep disturbances?

There are many tools we use to help with insomnia! We often use them to help get people off of sleep medications. I wish I could give you specifics, but I know nothing else about you as a person. For instance, if school/work stress has changed, we would approach this from a perspective of supporting the adrenals during the day. But if it's dietary related, you might just be deficient in key nutrients to make sleep hormones. In that case, we can use amino acids as legos so your body can build its own sleep hormones instead of just pumping you full of a sedative. Some cases are emotional trauma related and we can use herbal formulas to help calm the mind and quiet racing thoughts. But it's hard for me to give a single answer without knowing what's causing the insomnia. This is where naturopathic doctors are different, we look for the root cause. READ MORE

  • I have severe bleeding during my periods which leaves me very tired. Can I take some natural supplements during this time?

There are many natural things to help with heavy bleeding, but you should see a doctor to make sure you aren't losing too much blood causing you to be anemic. Having low iron could be the cause of your fatigue. READ MORE

  • Is honey safe for kids?

Honey is completely safe and a good source of natural sugars (as opposed to artificial sweeteners) in children over 1 year of age. The infections you are most likely reading about occur when an infants gut bacteria are too immature and consuming honey then causes a botulinum toxicity. READ MORE

  • Can lavender essential oil help me during my bouts of depression?

Plant essential oils are completely safe as long as they are not being consumed internally. There are a few exceptions that still require a doctors supervision. However, if the depression is only occurring once per month it sounds like there is an underlying hormonal problem that could resolve this issue. Depression does not always need constant medication if the source of the problem is found and addressed. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture treat digestive problems?

Having acupuncture on hand for quick relief is an amazing utilization of Chinese medicine. I've used it many times myself. If this is occurring after every meal he may need multiple treatments per week to make it an effective tool. This sometimes discourages patients and I always encourage my patients to ask for expected goals as acupuncture is a subtle art. From a western diagnosis, he may just need some GI help and rebalancing. READ MORE

  • Is there any natural treatment for PCOD?

This is my favorite question! This is my absolute favorite thing to treat. I use a combination of herbs and bio-identical hormones to regulate your body and get things back on track. If there is a history of a hormonal birth control (pill or IUD) we have some adjusting to do so we can remind your body what normal is. It's hard to get more specific without knowing personal history, but this is completely treatable with lifestyle and diet changes along with naturopathic tools. READ MORE

  • Is Propidren safe and effective for hair loss? How does it work?

That only blocks one type of hormone. Without knowing where all of your other hormones are at, it is hard to say if it would be effective. Hair loss postpartum is normal (I am still growing back mine), but excessive can be due to low thyroid or other combinations of hormone fluctuations. READ MORE

  • My mother has a constant headache despite the medications she is taking. What can I do to help her?

Headaches are a tricky beast to treat because there could be multiple causes. Naturopathic physicians take a closer look at the whole person so it is possible we find another underlying problem that triggers the headaches. As far as natural medications, it is hard to say without knowing what medications she is currently taking so there are no deleterious interactions. Find a Naturopathic doctor near you to help with adjunct care such as acupuncture and herbal medicine along with a detailed history. READ MORE

  • Does echinacea work?

Yes it does! Echinacea has immune stimulating properties and anti-viral properties. Historically, it used to be used for sepsis. Because of its stimulant properties, it should only be taken when you feel a cold coming on or are caregiving for a sick person. The properties that give the plant these abilities are only produced when the plants are stressed or exposed to environmental changes. So, finding a good source is very important when choosing herbal support. A good naturopathic physician or registered herbalist will be able to direct you to high-quality sources. READ MORE
