Get to know Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ralph Clement Darling III, who serves patients in Albany, New York.

Dr. Darling III is a reputable vascular surgeon who specializes in arterial insufficiency, thoracic and infrainguinal aortic aneurysms, aortic and thoracic endografts, peripheral artery bypass, carotid artery disease, venous disease, lymphatic disease, and all arterial venous and lymphatic operative and non operative therapies. He is the Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Albany Medical Center, which delivers the highest level of medical care to patients while promoting vascular health.

In addition to overseeing his large clinical network and serving as Chief of Vascular Surgery at Albany Medical Center, the indefatigable Dr. Darling III wears many other hats. He is a Professor of Surgery at Albany Medical College, and has appointments on many national and regional vascular surgery societies.

His healthcare career began in high school as a vascular lab technician at Massachusetts General Hospital. As a young man, he wanted to avoid a career in medicine but eventually was persuaded to enter the field. In preparation for his career, he earned an undergraduate degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. 

Graduating with his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1984, Dr. Darling III went on to perform his residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center – West Campus. After completing his residency, he headed to Albany Medical Center for a year-long fellowship in vascular surgery. Although he loved Boston, he decided to stay at Albany after graduation because it offered him the volume and complexity of cases he desired.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is a member of the Eastern Vascular Society, the Society for Vascular Surgery, and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

Leading a remarkable career for more than three decades, Dr. Darling III is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. 

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.

Attributing his success to good support from partners, hard work, and dedication, Dr. Darling III has written over 190 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals, authored more than 110 book chapters, and has lectured extensively around the world throughout his career. He has been named among Strathmore’s Who’s Who and America’s Top Doctors every year since 2002, and the Best Doctors of the Hudson Valley since 2006. 

In his free time, he maintains an active lifestyle by skiing, playing tennis and traveling.
