Get to know Pulmonologist, Dr. Alan S. Chanales, who serves patients in Rockville, Maryland

Dr. Chanales is a board-certified pulmonologist who sees patients at his private practice in Rockville, Maryland. He is also affiliated with Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, and Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. His areas of clinical interest include asthma, COPD, emphysema, pneumonia, lung cancer, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Chanales is also actively lecturing locally in cooperation with several pharmaceutical companies. 

Dr. Chanales received his medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 1977. He then  completed his internal medicine residency through Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York (1980), followed by his fellowship in pulmonary medicine conducted in East Orange, New Jersey at the VA Hospital. 

Dr. Chanales holds three board certifications with the American Board of Internal Medicine, i.e., critical care medicine, pulmonary disease medicine, and internal medicine. The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. 

Internal medicine or general internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists.

Critical care medicine, or intensive care medicine, is a medical specialty that deals with seriously or critically ill patients who have, are at risk of, or are recovering from conditions that may be life-threatening.

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract. Pulmonology is considered a branch of internal medicine, and is related to intensive care medicine.

Dr. Chanales is the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2018), the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018), and the On-Time Doctor Award (2018) from Vitals.com. He is also a member of the Maryland State Medical Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.
