Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Andrew D. Schmidt, who serves patients in Florida.

A board-certified physician specializing in the field of gastroenterology, Dr. Schmidt’s special area of interest is in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. He is currently affiliated with Health First Medical Group, seeing patients at their office in Melbourne, Florida.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Schmidt attended medical school at SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, New York and completed his internship and residency at North Shore University Hospital. He then went on to complete his fellowship in gastroenterology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Upon completion of his training in 1998, the doctor attained board certification in gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in 1999. The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Later on, in 2018 and 2019, he attained board certification in gastroenterology and internal medicine through the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons (NBPAS). The NBPAS is committed to providing continuing board certification for both MDs and DOs that reduces physician burden and increases time for patient care, while upholding the highest standards of continuing medical education and lifelong learning. Dr. Schmidt then recertified in gastroenterology in November 2020 through ABIM.

Among his other roles, Dr. Schmidt has admitting privileges at Holmes Regional Medical Center.  Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

The International Association of Healthcare Professionals recognizes Dr. Schmidt as a Leading Physician of the World and Top Gastroenterologist in Melbourne, Florida. This honor is bestowed to those individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in the field of Gastroenterology.

In December of 2011, he was recognized as a Patients’ Choice physician. This honor was given to Dr. Schmidt as a reflection of his patients’ continued appreciation and praise for the quality of care and service that he provides. Of the nation’s 720,000 active physicians, only 5 percent were awarded this honor by their patients in 2011. 

In 2015, Dr. Schmidt was selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in the specialty of Gastroenterology.  In 2018, Dr. Schmidt was selected to be Physician of the Year at Health First Medical Group.
