Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Mohammad Akmal, who serves patients in Los Angeles, California.

An established nephrologist, Dr. Akmal serves patients at his private practice in Los Angeles, California. He specializes in dialysis, hypertension, kidney disease, and renal transplant. He also holds a faculty position at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.

A native of Pakistan, he graduated with his medical degree from the Khyber Medical College in 1967. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed two consecutive fellowships in nephrology at the Christ Hospital and the LAC+USC Medical Center in 1976 and 1980, respectively.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Akmal is an active member of the American Society of Nephrology, the American Heart Association, the Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America, the International Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California, and the Society for Advancement of Science.

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.

An authority in his field, Dr. Akmal has been the recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award by the Keck School of Medicine at USC (2002), Leadership Award by National Kidney Foundation of Southern California (1999), and Medical Students Appreciation Certificate by the Keck School of Medicine at USC (2000-2006).

On a more personal note, he attributes his success to education, hard work, patient care, passion, and discipline. In his free time, he enjoys sightseeing, playing volleyball, reading, and traveling.
