Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Leonard R. Sanders, who serves patients in Monterey, California. 

Recognized as an expert in the field of endocrinology, Dr. Sanders has more than 45 years of experience in direct patient care, administration, teaching, and research. At present, he is in practice with Montage Medical Group – Ryan Ranch in Monterey, California. 

Montage Medical Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Montage Health, which also owns Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), Community Health Innovations (an accountable care services organization), and Aspire Health Plan. Services offered at Ryan Ranch include family practice, internal medicine, pulmonology, infectious disease, endocrinology, psychiatry, urology, neurology, as well as cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. 

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Sanders graduated with his medical degree from the UCSF School of Medicine in 1975. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1976 and 1978, respectively. Wanting to further his education, he served his fellowship training in endocrinology and nephrology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center (1980), the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (1993), and the Brooke Army Medical Center – Fort Sam Houston (1993). 

Retiring from the Army as a colonel, Dr. Sanders was elected a member of The Order of Military Medical Merit in 1990. He spent 8 years at Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque and 9 years caring for the Pima Indians at Gila River Health Care near Phoenix, Arizona.

Attributing his success to a firm desire to help others achieve overall better health and quality of life, he is board-certified in internal medicine, nephrology & endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

With a special interest in diabetes care, Dr. Sanders serves on the Board of Directors of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. He is also certified in hypertension, diabetes education, advanced diabetes management, and clinical lipidology. 

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Endocrine Society, the National Kidney Foundation, the Renal Physicians Association, the American Medical Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the American Society of Hypertension, the National Lipid Association, and the American College of Physicians (Fellow). 

Showing dedication, leadership and excellence in his field, Dr. Sanders has conducted several publications in national peer-reviewed journals. He is also the author of four book chapters in Endocrine Secrets on topics of hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia, nephrolithiasis, and water metabolism.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others. 

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Sanders enjoys riding his motorcycle as well as playing basketball and tennis. His favorite professional publications are the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Diabetes Care.
