  • What is gingivitis and its risk factors?

Keeping your dental cleanings on schedule based on the requirements your dentist/hygienist has determined is best for you. Sometimes people have cleanings every 3 months and sometimes every six months fulfills your maintenance requirement. Brushing with a ADA approved toothpaste and using floss on a daily basis will keep gingivitis under control. Using a mouthwash is an adjunct to your normal homecare. Signs to look for are bleeding gums. READ MORE

  • How effective is clove oil to reduce tooth pain?

First of all, I am so sorry that you are having a problem with a tooth. Toothaches can stem from many issues. If seeing your dentist is not an option quickly to alleviate your toothache, then taking some over the counter ibuprofen is most likely the best option. Clove oil is used in medicated fillings in the dental office because they are regulated in its formula and the mode of administration. We never just place the oil on the tooth or gums. Your very best option is to see your dentist ASAP. READ MORE

  • Can an infected tooth spread the infection to the other teeth as well?

If you have an infection that needs antibiotics prior to working on the tooth, you most likely are either needing a root canal or an extraction. The reason the antibiotics are being prescribed is to make your experience better because the anesthetic used will work more effectively than if the infection is in the full blown stage. As far as spreading to other teeth. All infections can spread because all teeth are connected. The best way to facilitate early healing is to do what your doctors is advising at the time. READ MORE

  • Did my dental x-rays harm my baby? (first trimester)

Well, first of all congratulations.... and no your baby will be fine. It is however very important that if all possible to eliminate or at least minimize radiation in the first trimester of a pregnancy but sometimes it is unavoidable. Please rest assured that the amount of radiation is very minimal that you receive in a dental office especially if they are taken digitally. Please do not worry. READ MORE

  • What if only one tooth is crooked?

My answer would be does your crooked tooth bother YOU???? Of course as a dentist who wants your mouth to be perfect would recommend you having it fixed. There are many ways you can fix one tooth out of position that doesn't always entail conventional braces. If you are a candidate for Clear Correct or Invisalign that might be a solution. There is more to that just a crooked tooth...is your bite correct??? Please see someone for an opinion. I will say that one crooked tooth will get worse as you get older...Good Luck.. READ MORE

  • Clicking in my jaw

I am not sure why your dentist has encouraged you to see an oral surgeon, unless there are other factors involved. Have you had any type of trauma, ie, got hit in the mouth, had a car accident??? All of those could cause trauma to the jaw joint(TMJ). Do you grind or clench your teeth when you are stressed or possibly at night. Have you had a recent x-ray of your jaw to determine if there is any trauma to the joint. Maybe your dentist referred you because they are not comfortable treating TMJ cases… Good Luck READ MORE

  • Skin is shedding on the inside of my mouth (my cheeks). Is this normal?

Most likely you are having a reaction to ether the abrasives used in your toothpaste (Tarter Control or Whitening) or even from a mouthwash that has alcohol in it. It dries out the tissues. Sometimes people can use the same product for long periods of time and then all of a sudden become sensitive. Hope this helps…Stop the product and re-eval…if still occurring, see your dentist. • Very swollen and red gums after routine dental cleaning

I am so sorry that you have had a problem but I will need more information. Had it been a while since your last routine cleaning? Did your hygienist say that you had more build-up or deeper than normal pocketing.? Are you taking any new medications or have you been diagnosed with any illnesses? Are you allergic to anything in particular? Please let know if I can help you. READ MORE
