About

I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center.  Although I see patients with all types of gastrointestinal issues, over the last 8 years, I have developed a sub-specialty interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Celiac Disease.  At my prior institution (Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center), I played a vital role in establising Penn State as a recognized leader in Inflammatory Bowel Disease care.  At UMDNJ - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School I continue to specialize in inflammatory bowel disease, with over 2000 patients being seen in the outpatient arena with this diagnosis.  I have a research interest in inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease as well and have published extensively in these 2 areas.

What do you attribute your success to?

  • I enjoy my interaction with patients which includes elucidating key points in the history and physical exam to help determine a diagnosis and treatment plan as well as connecting with patients to help ease their anxiety and discomfort. What I truly enjoy also is relating to the patient as a human being since that can sometimes be lost in medicine. I derive much satisfaction being able to educate my patients and advocate for them.

I also enjoy teaching learners at all levels (ie: students, residents, fellows, colleagues within other specialties as well as gastroenterology). I have always felt that by teaching others, it forces you to have to know the material thoroughly.

I try to stay as balanced as I can in my role as clinician/educator/researcher at work as well as trying to incorporate things into my life which are very important to me such as spending quality time with my family, leisure reading, traveling and biking. Small doses very frequently keep the work-life balance very steady which in turn allows me to be a better physician.
