Dr. Ennever earned his medical degree in 1988 at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. Furthermore, he served a three-year internal medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1988 – 1991), as well as a one-year residency at UPMC Shadyside (1991 – 1992). He advanced his training with a fellowship in medical oncology, which he conducted at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut (1992 – 1995). .
Following his training, Dr. Ennever attained board certification in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. The American Board of Internal Medicine is not a membership society, educational institution, or licensing body.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen, and the mechanism of coagulation. Such diseases might include hemophilia, blood clots (thrombus), other bleeding disorders, and blood cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.
Oncology is the study of cancer. The field of oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical, and radiation. A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. A radiation oncologist treats cancer using radiation therapy.
Dr. Ennever maintains active professional memberships with the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Southern Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the Society of Hematologic Oncology, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the Piedmont Oncology Association.
Outside his professional commitments, Dr. Ennever spends his down time with his wife, three cats, and their dog. He also enjoys going to Georgia Tech sporting events, swimming, working out and trying to stay young.
