James A. Alongi, DMD, has a private practice in Garden City, Nassau County and Ridgewood, Queens, New York. He has been serving Nassau and Queens counties for 32 years. Dr. Alongi specializes in periodontics and dental implants, restoring teeth which have been ravaged by peridontal disease back to health. Dr. Alongi treats non-surgical and surgical peridontal cases, and dental implant surgical placement. Dr. Alongi also treats tempromandibular joint dysfunction with a non-surgical approach where indicated. Is gum disease possible in a 3 year old?
When the oral tissues, gums, cheeks, and tongue are dry due to mouth breathing, the immune components which are in saliva, are not present and bacteria can flourish, there are over-the-counter medications which help produce saliva in dry mouths, there is also a prescription medication rinse, Neutrasol, which I have found effective in my patients with dry mouth. Remember, a lack of saliva and its protective components help reduce bacteria not only on the gingiva, but also on the teeth helping to prevent tooth caries or decay. READ MORE

How quickly can smoking cause gum disease?
Smoking introduces many toxins which negatively affect the whole body, but the first tissues to be assaulted are the oral tissues and depending on the strength of one's imune system the damage could begin sooner rather than later. The bottom line, don't smoke! READ MORE

What could be the reason for white spots on my gums?
White spots or white lesions could be the result of some type of trauma, i.e., hard crust on bread, etc. It can also be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. READ MORE
Why are my dental implants hurting my gums?
You should speak to your periodontist as soon as possible. The implant crown may need to be adjusted. Also, the dental cement which is used to cement the implant crown may have extruded and lodged below the gum, which could cause an infection. In any case, if your gums are hurting and not getting better each day, see your periodontist. READ MORE
Why are my gums darkening?
If your gums are darkening or turning red, not pink, you may have gingivitis or periodontitis. Have your dentist examine you for signs of periodontal disease. READ MORE
