Get to know Neurologist Dr. Talat Q. Alvi, who serves patients in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Alvi is a board-certified neurologist who specializes in dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of many categories of conditions and diseases involving the central and peripheral nervous systems. He is currently serving patients at Novant Health Inpatient Stroke & Neurosciences – Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he remains dedicated to providing the highest standard of care and enhancing the quality of life. 

Forsyth Medical Center is a 921-bed hospital, the largest hospital in the Novant Health system. Inpatient Stroke & Neurosciences is the first certified comprehensive stroke center in the Winston-Salem region at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. 

The comprehensive stroke center has been certified three times since 2012, the first year the designation was available from The Joint Commission, the country’s leading accrediting organization for improving healthcare. Certification recognizes innovative procedures, advanced technology, and adherence to stricter treatment standards for stroke care.

As an expert in the neurological field, Dr. Alvi brings vast knowledge and unrivaled expertise in neuromuscular medicine to Novant Health. Among his many professional qualifications, he is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the public interest and the professions of psychiatry and neurology by promoting excellence in practice through certification and continuing certification processes. Specializing in neurology and teleneurology, the doctor also remains committed to advancing his efforts through his membership with the American Academy of Neurology, which strives to promote the highest quality patient-centered neurologic care and enhance member career satisfaction.  

A 1989 graduate of Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan, Dr. Alvi relocated to the United States to complete his internship in internal medicine at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Rossville, Maryland in 2000. Wanting to further his training, he completed his residency in neurology at Howard University Hospital in Washington D.C. in 2008, followed by his fellowship in neuromuscular medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut in 2009. 

With an impressive professional journey that spans over three decades, Dr. Alvi is affiliated with several medical centers in the area, including the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center and McLeod Regional Medical Center. Attributing his success to his perseverance and his love of the field, he is the recipient of the On-Time Doctor Award in 2018, Patients’ Choice Award from 2016 to 2018, Compassionate Doctor Recognition in 2017 and 2018, National Resident Scholars Program in 2007, and American Academy of Neurology Award in 2008. 

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.

Outside of the office, Dr. Alvi enjoys traveling internationally and spending time with his family and friends. In addition to English, he speaks Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi.
