Venous Disorders
Veins are blood vessels that return blood from the tissues to the heart, and in the case of veins in the legs, this return occurs against gravity. Veins have valves that facilitate circulation of blood towards the heart but when these valves become insufficient, they allow blood to pool down and...
How to treat hardened arteries?
It depends on the location of the hardened arteries and if they are causing symptoms secondary to decreased blood flow downstream to a narrowing or occlusion. If on the heart, a cardiologist would be the right specialist to see but if in the aorta (largest blood vessel in the body) or any of its branches, like arteries in the neck, arms, legs or abdomen, you should see a Vascular Surgeon. As Vascular Surgeons we are trained and capable of offering all possible alternatives including medical therapy, endovascular or open procedures to treat your specific issues. I recommend consulting with a Board-Certified Vascular Surgeon for your vascular problems. READ MORE
Will varicose veins go away if I lose weight?
Once you have developed varicose veins they will not go away unless treated, but they may become less visible and cause you less discomfort and pain with weight loss as the elevated pressure inside the veins will be relieved to some degree by losing weight. Similarly, results following treatment for varicose veins will be better when patients have lost weight. When ablation is performed for venous insufficiency in obese patients, long term results are not as effective as they would be on patients who are not overweight. READ MORE
Are lumpy varicose veins dangerous?
Lumpy varicose veins are not dangerous per se but they may be a sign and indication of a medical condition called venous insufficiency. This condition is not life-threatening but can be very disabling in the long term as its progression is slow but irreversible without adequate diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately diagnosis is easily performed in the comfort of our office with an ultrasound and treatment, when indicated, is very quick and low risk, also performed in our office. There is no downtime with the treatment and many patients elect to go back to work following their procedures! READ MORE
Will compression socks help varicose veins?
Compression stockings will not cure varicose veins but they will help with preventing them from getting larger over time when used consistently and will also help with preventing symptoms of heaviness and tiredness of legs at the end of the day in patients who have venous insufficiency and varicose veins. Compression stockings are the first line treatment of venous insufficiency and varicose veins and a trial of compression is always required prior to performing any interventions. Make sure to purchase compression stockings from your surgeons office or a specialized store after being adequately measured. Stockings purchased online or at stores like pharmacies and grocery stores are not tailored to your individual measurements so they won't be as comfortable and effective! READ MORE
How dangerous are spider veins?
Hello! That is a great question! Spider veins are not dangerous or have negative effects but occasionally they can be related to venous insufficiency or deep venous problems. Usually they are present without any other venous pathology and can be treated with sclerotherapy or laser if there are cosmetic concerns. A simple ultrasound evaluation performed in our office can determine if there is an underlying superficial or deep venous problem. If identified, a comprehensive plan will be formulated tailored to each patient's symptoms and concerns. Most times this will include compression therapy and lifestyle modification but can sometimes include simple and painless procedures performed in the comfort of our office and with minimal to no downtime. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.
Dr. Vargas chose vascular surgery for the variety of conditions she treats and the different open and endovascular procedures that she can offer her patients.
